Theresa asked:

I'm a protestant and I say the rosary every day. I don't have a problem with that as a prayer for intercession from Mary on my behalf. I understand about a devotion to Mary, but it seems like this devotion or intercession is more important than our relationship to Christ.

Tim Staples replied:

"If anything we should honor her more for what she did in cooperating to bring Jesus to the whole world ... She had a unique role to play in salvation, and so she's greater than all other members of the body of Christ. So we should treat her as such.

I think the key point here to remember is the distinction is when we Catholics go to mass, the mass is the high point. This is what everything else in our lives are ordered toward ... The mass begins in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and the entire mass is directed to the Father in Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit, and any reference to Mary or the saints is peripheral. So there's no doubt in the Catholic church that worship and offering the Holy Sacrifice is to God alone in honor of Mary and the saints, but at the same time...we acknowledge the great members of the body of Christ...not because of them, but because of what Christ has done in them and through them."
