Matt asked:

Can you provide biblical support for the bodily assumption of Mary?

Jimmy Akin replied:

"I would point out, and this is just quoting from the second Vatican council - the Catholic church doesn't derive all of its confidence regarding particular teachings from scripture alone ... There are passages in the New Testament that some have suggested may point to the assumption of Mary ... the classic example of that is in Revelation 12, where John sees a woman who gives birth to the messiah in heaven in glorious form, crowned with twelve stars and clothed in the sun with her feet on the moon ...

That can and does mean other things as well. Pope Benedict the 16th pointed out that also refers to some other things but some people have thought there could be a reference to the assumption in there. But it's not from passages of scripture like that alone that we would draw our confidence in this. We also draw our confidence in this teaching from other information including information preserved in writings of the Church fathers and then ultimately the Magisterium infallibly ruled on those traditions and said yes, Mary was assumed into heaven at the end of her earthly life."

Revelation 12
And a great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; 2 she was with child and she cried out in her pangs of birth, in anguish for delivery.
