Tyler asked:

When we pray the rosary are we paying honor to Jesus or to the Blessed Mother?

Patrick Madrid replied:

"Well we're doing both. The rosary is more specifically a prayer directed to the Blessed Virgin Mary asking her for her intercession. At least in terms of its focus, primarily is on Mary, but everything of course that our prayer ... ultimately [Editor's note: couldn't understand what was said] to the Lord so even those prayers that we ask for ... intercession from the saints in heaven it's still a form of honoring God ... Catholics use the term prayer in two different ways. One form of prayer is the form that we give to God. That's the prayer of adoration and worship that a creature gives to his creator. Then we use the term prayer in another way which refers to asking the saints in heaven to pray for us. I think it's worth mentioning that too that when we ask the saints in heaven to pray for us, it doesn't detract from our love for God. It's not as though we're going to them instead of God ..."

Tyler asked:

Why do we bless our rosary beads?

Patrick Madrid replied:

"The blessing is the Church's action of hallowing something for sacred purpose. It could be holy water, rosary beads, candles, there are any number of things that can be blessed. It's a way to show the person using that that this has been hallowed, set apart for sacred purpose. It's a good thing to have your rosary beads blessed. I would encourage that."
