Dean asked:

I know of this TV show where there is a medium who says she is a Catholic. Has there ever been a time when the use of a medium was sanctioned by the Church?

Jimmy Akin replied:

"No there are no such instances. Mediumship is expressly forbidden both by the Old Testament and by the Catholic faith, and consequently it’s simply something we are not to pursue. There are cases where on an extraordinary basis God may allow a person to have visions of the saints, but that’s not the same thing as being able to summon up any random dead person. It’s something that’s an extraordinary event that happens at God’s initiative. The visionary doesn’t have control over it in the way that a medium purports to. Where a medium has essentially a phone book for the after life, and can dial up anyone they want and chat with them and get information from."
